Overlord Season 4 release date: Overlord is a Japanese light novel series written by Kugane Maruyama and illustrated by so-bin. The novels began serializing on the Internet in 2010. Later, the rights to the series were acquired by Enterbrain. Fourteen volumes of the Overlord series have been published so far. The author also made official that the show would be translated into a total of 17 books. At the moment there are three more volumes to be published.

As all popular light novels go, this one also got its manga adaptation. The manga anthology was created by Satoshi Ōshio and the artwork was created by Hugin Miyama. The manga began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten’s manga magazine Comp Ace in November 2014. Like the novels, the manga audience also received the adaptation with much love. And so the Overlord series got its popular position among Japan’s famous mangas. So let’s enter the world of the Overlord series and explore the possibilities of Overlord Season 4.

Overlord: The Anime

Overlord Season 4

Like all popular mangas, this one too got its anime adaptation soon. The anime television series was created by Madhouse Studios. The production company created three seasons in three years. Each season consisted of 13 episodes. The first season aired from July 7 to September 29 in 2015.

The series also managed to release two feature films in between seasons. One was released on February 25, 2017 and the other on March 11, 2017. The next two seasons made their debut in one year. The sequel was released between January 9 and April 3, 2018. And the third premiered the same year on July 10, 2018. The final episode of the Overlord series aired on October 2, 2018. Since then, there has been no animated product from this popular franchise it came out. Fans eagerly await the release of Overlord Season 4.

Overlord Season 4: What Happened So Far?

The story of Overlord takes place in the futuristic world of the year 2126. There is a Dive Massively Multiplayer Online Role-playing (MMORPG) called YGGDRASIL. This game is unique in its own interface as it allows the user to interact with the game incredibly well. But the game has been around for twelve years, and now it’s time to shut it down. All servers are about to be destroyed. In the game world, there is a guild of 41 players who go by the name of Ainz Ooal Gown.

Of this strongest guild there are only four members, while the other 37 have left the game. The guild leader happens to be a skeletal “Overlord” character named Momonga. He’s the one who manages all the headquarters chores in The Great Tomb of Nazarick. As a farewell, Momonga takes the remaining guild members out for the final gathering. But only one is coming. And so a sad Momonga decides to stay logged in until all servers are finally destroyed and shut down.

The plot continues!

Everything turns upside down when the time for the final shutdown arrives. Momonga discovers that the game has not really disappeared. Instead, he finds out that the Great Tomb of Nazarick has been transferred to a completely different world. Even though NPCs get that feeling, they are carried away with the world. Momonga is then stuck in the game in his existing avatar. This prevents him from performing common tasks such as sending a message or even logging out. So, Momonga sets out on a journey to explore the new world he’s trapped in. He wants to find other people in the world.

And so he functions under the guild of Ainz Ooal Gown to search for other creatures in the virtual world. He tries to send messages to other players, but fails. The protagonist does all of this while ensuring Nazarick’s safety. The story revolves around the psychology of a human in a virtual world. We also get to see how Momonga escapes from the game’s role world.

Overlord: The Source Material

With so many existing anime series from a fictional world, almost all of them use light novels or manga as their source material. The main thing is to keep an eye on the chronology of the source novels. We have to check how many light novels the series has released and are covered in the story. Here, Overlord’s story spans half of the new series so far. At this point, Overlord’s light novels are still ongoing. And three more novels have yet to be released. So to say that the animated series will come to an end.

What novels have been covered so far?

Overlord runs chronologically with the new series. For the first three seasons, the show adapted three light novels. And so Madhouse Studios bought the rights to the first nine-light novels. This means that if the showmakers decide to make even more episodes, they will continue the series from the tenth book. They can also look for newer storylines from the later novels if they skip something.

Overlord: Worldwide Collections

The Overlord series did exceptionally well in terms of numbers. About 12,500 copies of each volume were sold in Overlord’s first season. When the second season was released, it performed weaker than the first. Only 7,000 copies have been sold worldwide. And of the last edition, only a small number of about 6,500 copies were sold. These drop-in Blu-ray sales are significant as the platform itself is dying out. If we compare sales to other animes, Overlord still fares better than most of them. Most series struggle to sell even 2,000 discs.

Speaking of the light novel series, the numbers here are even more surprising. In terms of sales, Overlord happens to be the second best-selling light novel by volume. The first in Japan is the Sword Art Online series. For Overlord, each book sold more than 200,000 copies. More than 235,000 copies of the thirteenth volume were sold. The last was the fourteenth volume of which more than 228,000 copies were sold. You can guess the craze of this series from numbers alone.

Gaming and merchandise collection

Overlord merchandise

Most of the show’s revenue is generated from merchandise sales around the world. About 30 figures are sold under the name Overlord. The figures mainly consist of Albedo. Some are Ainz plus one for EvilEye, Narberal and Shalltear. Officially, Overlord produces more than 300 goods for trade purposes. But it seems like it is a smaller number compared to other franchises out there. For example, Konosuba season 3 hasn’t even happened yet, but Konosuba sells over 1,100 merchandise items and 105 figures. The first season of Overlord yielded 40% more merchandise than the second and third seasons.

Gaming is also an arena captured by this series. The mobile game Overlord is called Mass For The Dead. The game is only available in the US and Japan through the Google Play Store. The numbers the game collects are considerably high this year. The game made more than $ 700,000 in Japan in March 2021.

Overlord Season 4: What to Expect?

Fourth season
Overlord Season 4

As previously mentioned, each season of the Overlord series follows one of the parts of the light novel. Considering that there are currently 14 volumes of the book, five more have yet to be covered in the anime. So we can easily judge that Overlord Season 4 will cover volumes ten, eleven and twelve. The tenth volume is entitled “The Ruler of Conspiracy.” The story here follows Ainz Ooal Gown and his choice to turn his kingdom into a paradise where all races coexist peacefully. Ainz started this action by empowering the Adventurer’s Guild and then moving on to the Empire.

In addition, the tenth part also contains the storyline of the rulers of other countries. The other realms are constantly working against Ainz Ooal Gown to break it down. The rulers seem to be surprised by the sudden emergence of a new kingdom. This is why they decided to ditch the Ainz Ooal dress in the first place.

Story of the 11th part

Coming to the eleventh volume, it is entitled “The Craftsman of Dwarf.” In this part, we see Ainz approaching the Dwarf Kingdom to search for the lost rune magic that will aid them in the future. He is joined by Shalltear Bloodfallen and Aura Bella Fiora on this quest. But they reach the Dwarf Kingdom to learn that even that kingdom has its own problems. Ainz discovers that the Dwarf Kingdom is under attack by a semi-human race called Quagga. And so they decide to help the people of the kingdom. The Dwarf Runesmiths promise to help Ainz if he fights the Quagoas for them.

The last twelfth part continues the story left in the eleventh edition. Volume 12 is called “The Paladin of the Holy Kingdom.” In this part, we meet the ultimate antagonist, the demon emperor, Jaldabaoth. In addition, the half-humans managed to destroy the Great Wall of the Holy Kingdom. For reference, the Great Wall was a pride symbol of the Holy Kingdom, and it was also one of its best defenses. Jaldabaoth is now the commander in chief of all allied forces and he wants to destroy all other kingdoms except his. Now it becomes Ainz’s duty to summon the remaining warriors of the Holy Kingdom and fight the demonic emperor to save other empires as well.

Overlord Season 4: Renewal plans

Renewal plans

For now, it is difficult to name a confirmed release date for the fourth season. The screenwriter reported that show creator Yukie Sugawara has been talking about the show’s overhaul lately. He said at the 2019 AnimagiC convention that a fourth season is almost a dream. Due to the popularity of the series, it is likely that the show will continue for a fourth season. Considering that the third season ended on an intriguing cliffhanger, it’s likely the fourth season will take place soon. Since it’s been a long time since the show has been off air, a trailer or teaser may be on the way soon.

All creators have not officially announced about the pots and the support that will be included there in the upcoming third season, received mixed reviews from critics and viewers alike for the show’s characters. Therefore, it seems likely that the fourth season will focus more on character arcs than fight sequences and action.

The release date of Overlord season 4 has not yet been announced. As mentioned above, the novel’s creator, Kugane Maruyama, and anime screenwriter Yukie Sugawara talk about possible releases of their work at the 2019 AnimagiC convention in Germany. When asked about Overlord’s fourth season, they only revealed that the show would take place and nothing more.

Given the state of health the world is in right now, the show’s productions have to suffer, just like any other anime work. We are likely to receive positive news this year. There is only a wait for now for the confirmed release date.
